SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

SAFETY BRIEFING (1400 Wednesday on or near the Norfolk Rebel)

Attendance is optional, but all captains are urged stop by for a taste of the Tugantine's incomparable hospitality. This informal gathering is a chance to see old friends from the schooner fleet and discuss any last-minute concerns about impending weather, measurements, rules, classing, sailing plans, etc. A member of the race committee will be available to assist you with paperwork. This is your last opportunity to submit measurements for handicapping. You may pay your entry fee, or complete your registration here. Race button required for admission. Shirts, hats, etc. will be available for sale.

SKIPPERS' MEETING (0800 Thursday at the Whistling Oyster.)

The Skippers' Meeting is mandatory for all captains. Schooners will be disqualified if not represented. Please bring the Skipper's Handbook. You will be asked to complete the registration process (if we have not received your checks, entry form, etc. in advance). Please submit your crew list (see last page) and let the committee know of any changes in your float plan or rig. Last-minute changes in course, rules, etc. may be discussed. GPS time will be announced for synchronizing watches. Race button required for admission. A continental breakfast will be provided.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

This is meant to be a fun race; however, the safety of a vessel and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the captain, who must insure that the vessel is sound, seaworthy, and manned by experienced crew who are physically fit. The captain must further ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and stowed, and that the crew knows its location and proper usage. It is also the sole and exclusive responsibility of the captain to decide whether or not to start or continue in any race. Vessels will be disqualified for unsafe operation or failure to have formal representation at the Skipper's Meeting Thursday morning. The race involves sailing at night in an area busy with commercial traffic. All participating vessels must fly radar reflectors, maintain a radio watch, and keep a good lookout at all times. Vessels unfamiliar with night sailing on the Chesapeake are encouraged to seek local knowledge before entering the event.

PROTESTS

Protests shall be heard for a mandatory $500 filing fee, payable to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, aboard the Norfolk Rebel, on New Years Day 2006, from 1200 to 1205, wherever the Norfolk Rebel may be located.

*From Sailingscuttlebutt.com 2103-May 26.2006: "'From Bill Wheary ...: In the 16 years that the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (Baltimore, Md. to Hampton Roads, Va.) has been run, there has never been a protest. Perhaps this is because the founder of the Race, Capt. Lane Briggs, whose untimely death occurred in 2005, announced at each race that the protest hearing would be held on New Year's Day on the deck of "Norfolk Rebel", his renowned "Tugatine." The race is held in October, and everyone knew that the "Norfolk Rebel" would be in Key West by New Year's Day.'"

CERTIFICATE OF WAIVER (Your copy - also appears on Entry Form)

I hereby agree that neither I nor any of my crew members shall hold The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, Inc. nor any of its personnel responsible for accidents, damage or injuries during the race or related activities; no crew member shall be aboard my vessel who has not consented to this waiver in his or her behalf.
