2008 Awards

The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Perpetual Trophy was awarded to Malabar II (C Fleet), James Lobdell at the helm, with the best corrected time of 10 hours, 41 minutes and 45 seconds.

The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Clock, awarded for line honors at Thimble Shoals — the fastest schooner in the race, went to Pride of Baltimore II (AA Fleet), Captain Jan Miles, with an elapsed time of 16 hours, 36 minutes and 3 seconds.

The Howdy Bailey Buckle, awarded to a B or C Fleet schooner for line honors at Windmill Point, was given to Malabar II (C Fleet), sailed by James Lobdell, with an elapsed time of 14 hours, 14 minutes and 15 seconds.

The Michelob Chesapeake Bay Challenge Trophy used to be given in conjunction with the Harborfest race, which has been discontinued. We are fortunate to have been able to resurrect it to honor a "traditional" schooner which demonstrates extraordinary sailing prowess or accomplishment during the current Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. Initiated in 2006, this award seeks to identify and bring recognition to a traditional schooner. Presentation of this award is at the sole discretion of the Race Committee. The award recipient does not have to be the fastest or first over the line, but rather the vessel who sails to or above her numbers in a demonstration of seamanship and lasting traditional design parameters. Malabar II received this honor in 2008.
