WHY
WE GIVE TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION
The Great Chesapeake
Bay Schooner Race was founded to "promote public awareness of the
Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage and to encourage the preservation
and improvement of the Chesapeake's natural resources. We accomplish
this goal by donating the proceeds of the race to one or more charitable
organizations involved in conservation of the natural resources of
the Chesapeake Bay."
Each year since
our inception, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has been chosen
to receive all schooner entry fees. Many schooners also make extra
donations to "Save the Bay."
Environmental
Education Activities
CBF's education
programs, working from 16 sites around the watershed, give 36,000
people per year to enhance their relationship with the Bay and the
natural world. "The first step in protecting the Chesapeake Bay is
giving people the opportunity to love it. The second is instilling
a sense of responsibility for its health." Participants canoe marshes,
dredge for oysters aboard CBF's historic skipjack, pull seine nets
through the waters of the Bay's tributaries, test water quality, and
participate in sustainable farming demonstrations at CBF's Clagett
Farm. Members are in all 50 states and 10 foreign countries.
